The history of Oak Tree Dojo - In1973, Sensei James S. Harai Sr, moved his family from Okinawa Japan to Fort Lewis, WA where he retired as a Captain in the United States Army. Professor Harai (Kodokan Hachidan - 8th Degree Black Belt) and his kids (Barbara, Jim Jr & Jerry) joined the Tacoma Fife Judo Club at the downtown Tacoma YMCA being taught by Professor Ryoichi Iwakiri. Professor Iwakiri was promoted by Shihan Jigoro Kano to Sandan - 3rd Degree Black Belt in 1938. After many years of service to Judo in the Pacific Northwest, Professor Iwakiri retired and promoted Harai Sensei as the Head Judo Instructor of the Tacoma Fife Judo Club.


In 1979 Harai Sensei relocated the Dojo to the brand new Tacoma YMCA (Morgan Family YMCA) located on Pearl Street. Harai Sensei renamed the Dojo to the Tacoma YMCA Judo Club. Harai Sensei brought his older kids and two younger kids (John Harai & Jason Harai) with him to practice until they were old enough to wear a Gi. Harai Sensei built one of the strongest Judo Clubs in the Pacific Northwest. Sensei Fred Ogden and his kids (Jack Ogden and Katie Ogden) joined the Tacoma YMCA Judo Club and has been with Harai Sensei ever since. In 2002 Harai Sensei closed the Tacoma Judo Club. Harai Sensei has promoted many students to the rank of Shodan - 1st Degree Black Belt all the way up to Godan - Black Belt 5th Degree. Some of the Black Belts that were promoted by Harai Sensei are; Travis Stevens, Barbara Harai, Jim Harai Jr, Jerry Harai, John Harai, Jason Harai, Fred Ogden, Georg Smith, Bob Moser, Larry Sterling, Kim Sterling, John Shimabukuro, Jack Ogden, Pancho Schrader, Gary Villareal, Brian Chang, Thomas Chang, Byron Redditt, Robin Russell, Russell Ohashi, Jesse Moser, Thom Whatley, Jamie Schrader and many others. In 2001 Sensei John Harai and Sensei Jason Harai formed the Ippon Judo Dojo at the Lakewood YMCA. Sensei Fred Ogden, Sensei Byron Redditt, Sensei Georg Smith, Sensei Bob Moser, Sensei Poncho Schrader and Sensei Robin Russell and others helped open the new Era in Harai Judo. They have since turned Ippon Judo & BJJ Dojo into a perennial power house locally, nationally and internationally. Oak Tree is the brother Dojo to Ippon Dojo.


In 2013 Sensei Fred Ogden formally opened Oak Tree Dojo as a store front business. Sensei Jim Harai Jr joined Sensei Fred when he opened his door for business. Sensei Fred is the Owner & Head Instructor. Sensei Jim Harai Jr is the Head Judo Instructor. Oak Tree Dojo was then joined by Harai Sensei as the Senior Head Instructor and Senior Rank Examiner, Sensei Lopaka Los Banos as a Lead Instructor, Sensei Chris Rhude as a Lead Instructor, Sensei Jack Ogden as a Lead Instructor and Sensei Russ Ohashi as a Lead Instructor. In 2015 Oak Tree Dojo welcomed Sensei Lukela Los Banos as an Assistant Instructor and Sensei Kiaya Van Scoyoc as an Assistant Instructor. Together we have built Oak Tree Dojo to become one of the largest Judo Dojo's in the Northwest Judo Yudanshakai. Oak Tree Dojo is a member of the United States Judo Federation (USJF) and the United States Jiu Jitsu Federation (USJJF). Oak Tree Dojo is a member of the Yelm Area Chamber of Commerce. All of our Instructors have to pass a required back ground check by the USJF. All of our Instructors are Certified in First Aid & CPR/AED. All of our Instructors also have taken the Safe Sport Course.


In 2014, Oak Tree Dojo expanded it's services by offering Self Defense/Self Awareness Classes. Sensei Fred Ogden, Sensei Lopaka Los Banos and Sensei Jim Harai Jr all became certified with the USJF to teach Self Defense. Sensei Jim Harai Jr & Sensei Lopaka Los Banos has since made several Self Awareness presentations during Sexual Assault Awareness Month at Saint Martins University in Lacey, WA. and with Self Awareness/Self Defense Classes to Medical Staff at local clinics.

In
2015 Oak Tree Dojo expanded it's services by offering Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as taught by Sensei Mike Joy, MABJJ Black Belt. In mid 2015 Oak Tree Dojo hired Sensei Joey Reese to take over as the Head Jiu Jitsu Instructor.


In
January 2016Oak Tree Dojo expanded it's Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class by becoming an Affiliate Club with Professor Marcelo Alonso of MABJJ/Team Carlson Gracie of Seattle, WA. Professor Marcelo Alonso grew up in Rio De Janeiro Brazil and studied Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Grand Master Carlson Gracie. Professor Marcelo Alonso was awarded his 4th Degree Black Belt from the IBJJF and his 5th Degree Black Belt under Carlson Gracie.


In November 2016, Oak Tree Dojo expanded it's Kodokan Judo Classes by becoming an aAfiliate Dojo to Hammer Head MMA

located in Olympia, WA. Sensei Jim Harai Jr is the Head Judo Instructor @ Hammer Head MMA - MABJJ - Team Carlson Gracie.


On December 11th, 2016 both Joey Reese and Joey Guel were promoted to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belts from Professor Marcelo Alonso (MABJJ - Team Carlson Gracie) at the December Promotions Ceremony held at Fife MABJJ.


On 01/23/2017 Oak Tree Dojo became an approved training facility for America's Wounded Veterans with the We Defy Organization. We welcome our nations hero's to come train with us.


On May 24th, 2016 the Judo Community lost a legend, Harai Sensei passed away at his place of residence. He leaves behind a legacy and many students that he has touched the lives of. RIP Sensei.
